Inaugural South Island Garden Party 2008 |
The Inaugural South Island Garden Party was held on the Saturday of the long Labour Day weekend, 25th October 2008, on the Canterbury Kennel Association (CKA) grounds. It's safe to say the event was a big hit, especially for those who have heard about the North Island ones.

***** TECHNICAL ISSUES *****
There's a glitch in the website innards at the moment. In the meantime new user registration has been disabled. Until then if you wish to register on this website please contact
This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it
with your details.
The other issue is around the user login functionality. At the moment login seems to be faulty. A temporary workaround is to tick the "Remember Me" option when you login. I can't quite figure out what's going wrong just yet so please remember to tick that option when you login. Everything should (hopefully) work as normal.

CanterBerner Autumn BBQ - 24 May 2008 |
It was a rather grim day to start with and several people pulled out. Others sent in their apologies early on when forecast for that day looked unsettled. Well, it was simply a typical Canterbury autumn day, overcast, windy, and slightly chilly. However, none of these put off both two and four-legged participants!
First of all we would all like to thank Gillian and David, with the
help of Charlotte, for hosting the event. It was an excellent day and
we all enjoyed ourselves. I hope your garden has recovered from the
attack of a dozen Berners! Thank you everyone who joined in and made it another excellent CanterBerner event. Read on to see a couple of photos from the day.

22nd Annual Garden Party 2008 |
|
Well as always suddenly it was that time again – yeap the Garden Party. It was decided to hold it in Taranaki as the venue is perfect for such an event and the people who organise it are close at hand (well a couple anyway) which makes it easier to work out all the details. The organisation of this event starts well before the end of 2007 – organising a judge, catering, venue, and of course the weather – yes another beautiful weekend put on by Taranaki I have to say.

Carting Event 17 May 2008 |
Having Barbera back on committee certainly has proved its worth with her suggesting to me that we hold a carting day in Taupo. We invited all members along with members of the Auckland Bernese Club and anyone else who might have been interested.

I found this article whilst looking on Trade Me. Having read it I felt the strong desire to see it more widely read in 'Bernese circles'. There seem to be many very wise words in the article and I may or may not agree with every one of them but that certainly doesn’t matter. What does is that the article is not only well meant educational and informative but certainly written for the betterment of 'the breed' which ever breed you choose to apply it too. Thankyou very much to the author for making it so freely available. I had been contemplating writing a similar article myself but I may not have worded it as well!

Purina Body Condition System |
Ever wondered how you can estimate if your Berner is in optimum condition? This chart should help with that. At time it is harder to judge on a Berner due to heavy winter coats but running your palm gently along the ribs while they're standing will also give you some idea. If the dog is in good condition you should just be able to feel the ribs through the coat and skin. If they're too obvious it is likely the dog is underweight to a certain degree, and if you have difficulties feeling the ribs then it is likely the dog is overweight.
